Senior Backend Developer

Join us as a Senior Backend Developer and help build software that reads, understands, and synthesizes complex scientific information, ultimately driving the development of a fully-fledged Science Assistant Machine.

Our client is focused on revolutionizing the way scientific research is done by building an ML-driven platform that aids scientists all over the world. This platform reads and understands scientific text to provide a comprehensive, human-friendly overview of the current state of research. As a Senior Backend Developer, you'll be contributing to this mission by developing software that can read and analyze text, build knowledge graphs, identify causal relationships between documents, and make inferences that connect the dots and suggest innovative future research directions.

Our developers work closely with our in-house machine learning research team, combining their findings with leading open-source frameworks from companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Nvidia. These frameworks are deployed on AWS infrastructure to create a robust, distributed, cloud-based ML software system. You'll be part of a team that drives innovation by leveraging the latest advancements in machine learning and software engineering, building tools that bring clarity and insight to the ever-growing body of scientific knowledge.

What you'll do in this role  

• Develop, specify, plan, and implement software solutions using Python, Django, and other cutting-edge technologies.
• Drive innovation by testing and adopting new technologies to enhance development productivity.
• Inspire stakeholders, including investors, customers, and potential team members.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features.
• Work in an agile process in a distributed team with limited connectivity.
• Research, design, and integrate software systems.
• Participate in the full process from concept to product delivery.

We're looking for

• At least 5 years of experience in software development.
• At least 3 years of Python programming experience.
• Experience in web development, including web services, REST services, databases, and cloud platforms.
• Experience leading and sharing knowledge with others.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a distributed team environment.
• Excellent English communication skills, at least upper-intermediate level.

How to knock our socks off

• A Master’s or higher degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience with AI/ML technologies.
• Previous experience in a management role (Team Lead, Tech Lead).
• Experience tutoring, teaching, or leading others.
• Background in fundamental academic research.
• Participation in research projects (academic or industrial).
• Experience presenting at academic conferences.
• Building web projects or other software projects from scratch.
